Stimulus

What does the stimulus say to me?

The chosen stimulus for our choreography piece has a lot of potential meanings and messages to give to an audience. To me, it represents mental health and some of the struggles that come with it. This is because the focal point of the picture is the brain, where the ‘mind’ is believed to reside, and stemming off from the brain are multiple branches leading to ‘emojis’ which are symbols used in modern technology to express feelings/emotions. As a result of there being so many emotions it may lead to confusion or a clash of emotions. This is what links it back to mental health. Another theme that I have done some research into is DID or Dissociative Identity Disorder, which is a mental illness that the person who is diagnosed with it will often experience :  amnesia, sense of being detached from yourself and emotions, a blurred sense of identity and the inability to cope well with emotional or professional stress. (Dissociative disorders – Symptoms and causes, 2020)

What will be the message that you are trying to give?

I think that the message we will be trying to give as a group through our piece is mental health and the many different branches that come off it. One of which is the mental illness DID which we have been looking at. To me, it is a battle within the mind. Two or more personalities are present and ultimately take control of the individual (Dissociative identity disorder (Multiple personality disorder),2020. Therefore, we will try to show through our piece that a battle is taking place.

What references have I got so far?

So far, I have done some research into a couple of films including ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Split’. I think ‘Inside Out’ is a good reference to use because although it is not clearly meant to be about DID, a conflict between emotions does take place.

  1. Hi Taylor, this is a great Blog! The structure was really easy to read and follow and everything you talked about was clearly explained. I really liked how you gave a detailed, description of what the stimulus meant to you, and included detailed research of what DID is and what message we have chosen to portray. Next time you could also include how as a class we voted for overarching themes and created a mind map of everyone's ideas to come to the final overall theme of DID. I also like how you included the reference to the film 'Inside Out' :)

  2. I like your resources for DID. Your image isn't loading so I'm not sure what you have referenced? Is there any research that shows the relationship between mental health and social media that you mention in your blog. Don't forget to reference all of your films.

  3. Great blog Taylor! I liked how detailed you were in describing what the stimulus meant to you and included research into DID. I think maybe explaining what a stimulus is would be helpful to the reader as well as possibly including the process our group went through to decide on the final stimulus. (:

  4. Hey Taylor, this was a great blog, maybe for next time, you should not include the questions but make it flow more and incorporate the questions into the paragraphs !
